10 Items You Can Buy On The High Street That Look Vintage

Tuesday, July 3, 2018

Although high street fashion retailers try to create unique designs each season, it is undeniable that trends are a recirculation of the past. Who can see this better than those who know a little about the history of dress? However, because of these modern twists and "updated" silhouettes, it can be difficult to find clothing in stores like Zara or H&M that truly have that vintage feel. Searching overflowing clothes rails in dark shopping malls for simple shirts that would not look out of place as part of an authentic 1950s outfit or bags that echo beach fashions of the previous century can be an arduous task.
After constantly noticing similarities between mid-century fashion and the items that appeared in shops recently I decided to round-up a list of 10 items available on the high street that have that vintage look. Of course, there are more! Just look at brands such as Reformation or With Jean.

Ribbed Navy Top
A simple ribbed top with a high neck. A classic piece that can be worn with bright coloured high-waisted shorts to the beach or paired with a 1940s wool set for a more formal day look. Available in navy and red. I have found similar ones in different colours and sleeve lengths here and here.

Cotton Top
A plain white cotton top is a universal wardrobe staple that needs little introduction. This particular one has a unique, terry-like cloth texture. Also comes in black.

Shirred Cotton Top With High Neck
A more elegant take on the typical camisole. This cotton top has decorative shirring across the yoke and a ruffled high neck. Harking back to Edwardian tea gowns it has an obvious vintage connotation.

Chevron Patterned Orange Top
Evoking the quintessential Missoni chevron print, this simply cut top can brighten up any vintage outfit.

Navy Woven Basket Bag
Even if you check instagram once a month you will know that wicker bags have made a comeback! And for those who love a bit of nostalgia in their wardrobe this is only good news... unless of course you are the practical type. Although even then you can find basket bags with long straps and backpacks made of straw - who knew!

Yellow Mesh Bag
A while back I wrote a post about the mesh bag. Read it here to find out how this fascinating historical trend came about and why it has a particularly nostalgic connotation in Poland. Sold also in beige and black.

Classic Black Top
Another universal top, also available in white. Keep an eye out on my Youtube channel to see it featured in a haul.

Jute Mesh Bag
And another mesh bag. This one is made of jute instead of cotton. I actually saw it in the Mango store and it no longer looked as good as it did online. Quite bulky and stiff, it is made of a wire-like mesh. If you are looking for durability then this one is for you but if a casual, easy to fold away bag is what you are after then this is not the one.

Frilled Blouse With Inset Lace
A pretty ruffled blouse with wide cuffed sleeves and delicate lace inlay. Another piece inspired by early 20th century undergarments, this breezy blouse would look great tucked into mom jeans for that vintage but on-trend look.

Puff-Sleeved Cotton Blouse
A short-sleeved version of the one above. Cotton garments are always a good idea for the summer and these have that loose but covered cut nailed to perfection. Although not cut from one piece of fabric the dolman sleeves evoke early 1950s fashions, especially knitwear designs.

Available at approachable prices high street clothing is great to fill the gaps in vintage wardrobes. However it is important to remember the conditions in which it is made and the waste that fast-fashion is responsible for. Always buy vintage when you can and make responsible, realistic choices about what clothing you will actually wear. If you are not sure return it.
